Why Is DNA Testing So Important?

DNA Testing Ottawa

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is considered a design that contains all the information needed to determine the components of any given cell.  Today it is a primary model in the fields of medicine, agriculture, and more.  It is a key element in medicine, law, and many forms of research.

Its application in humans takes a number of forms.

Forensics – DNA tests provide the unique identifiers of each person.  For police or legal issues, samples of blood, hair, or other tissue are taken.  Laboratory technicians analyze the samples and report on the results.  Samples from suspects are matched to samples found at crime scenes and entered into evidence.  The results are generally accepted as fact and are used to convict or exonerate individuals.

Agriculture – Scientists are able to identify specific parts of plant DNA that will contribute toward greater resistance to disease or to increase production for more crops.  The plants can be genetically modified to produce greater yield and feed more people.  Other aspects of farming and ranching also benefit from improved animal breeding.

There are a number of aspects to DNA and how it relates to us.

  • If paternity is in question, it can be a valuable tool to identify parents.
  • It can be used to identify and trace ancestors.  It can also be used to determine the country of origin of many of our relatives.  It is sometimes used to trace lost family members.
  • Newborns are frequently tested to identify potential problems.
  • It can indicate a propensity for certain illnesses.
  • Scientists are using it to trace the origins of certain species.
