Garage door repair

Garage doors are one of the key entry points into our homes.  They need to be kept in good repair for the ease of driving in and out, as well as a security feature for the safety of ourselves, our families, and our possessions.

A good garage door will probably last 10 or 15 years.  After that time, you may start to notice some issues like squeaks or sluggish opening.  This is not something to be ignored.  What may seem minor can quickly accelerate into a major problem.  There is also the danger of the mechanism giving way and causing more damage.  Here are some things to look for.

Vibrations

As the door moves, if you notice it shaking, even a little, this could be the sign of an issue that can usually be corrected easily.  If it is just a nut that has become loose or worn, it can be replaced.  However, it could also be a structural issue in the rails.  By tackling this problem early you can avoid more costly repairs or replacements.

Strange Noises

There are a number of things that can cause the door to start to sound unusual.  These are sometimes squeaks or rattles.  This can be the sign of rusty springs or loose parts.  It is important to address these issues before something breaks or becomes worse.  Have a repair person come and check this out.

Frequent Sticking

If the door is starting to stick, have it looked at.  Leaving it without repair could just mean a more extensive repair in the future.  It probably means at least one part is beginning to fail.  By taking care of the repair early, you are actually saving money.

Delays in Operation

If your door is not responding promptly to the remote opener, there could be a need to have the rails and springs lubricated.  There could also be cables that are starting to deteriorate, bad springs, or a defect in the opener.  If it is happening often, or increasing in frequency, call your repair person promptly.

Air Leaking

Especially if you have insulated garage doors and you start to notice the garage not holding the temperature appropriately, feel gusts of wind, or notice that your utility bills are increasing, it is a signal that the insulation is failing.  This could be due to age, the door not completely closing, or cracks or holes.  In any event, have the door examined and repaired as appropriate.
