Use Floor Coatings for your Garage

Garage Floor Coatings

The garage is a space that can be put to many different uses by homeowners. Besides the most obvious use of the garage, it can be used to store away valuable possessions, as an attractive play area for kids, and even as a space to accommodate visitors for barbeques and other fun times. The installation of garage floor coatings will make the space fit for purpose, look attractive and protect the floor.

Garage floor coatings are closely similar to epoxy. The coatings give the floor a ceramic finish. The epoxy used for the floor coatings is a liquid mixture that acts as a protective finish and sealant. Its popularity is growing highly due to its protective nature and visually appealing finish.

More and more garages are being converted into offices and workshops which demands that the garage floor is renovated into an appealing surface. The epoxy coating makes the garage floor resistant to dirt, water, oil, and grease. These protective characteristics of the floor coatings are unrivaled helping the floor withstand just about anything. These coatings are comparatively stronger than the traditional concrete floor finish and give the floor prolonged longevity.

The installation of garage floor coatings takes quite a short time which doesn’t extend beyond one week. Preparation of the garage floor is the longest step and involves cleaning and roughing the floor to receive the epoxy. The application of the epoxy coatings is then done and can be customized to create an appealing final look.

During the installation process, the garage should be well ventilated since the cleaners and paints used for application emit hazardous fumes. Adequate ventilation ensures that you protect yourself and workmates from the harmful fumes. It is recommended that you have protective clothing such as gloves and goggles when handling the chemicals.

The concrete floor must be swept and cleaned to get rid of stains. A concrete or driveway cleaner is sprayed on the stain to dislodge it and then scrubbed with a stiff-bristled brush. The floor is then rinsed clean with plain water. If the floor has cracks and holes, they are repaired using concrete/repair compound or concrete patches depending on size.

The application of epoxy commences with the primer coat using a long-handled paint roller and then left to dry for eight hours. Thereafter, epoxy or polyurethane is painted in layers with the first coat allowed to dry for 24 hours before a second coat is applied for a beautiful and appealing final finish.
