For so long, the only way to successfully straighten your teeth was via the application of traditional metal braces. But technology has come a long way since the beginning of dentistry, and you might not have to wear typical braces for one to three years anymore. For some individuals who wish to straighten the alignment of their teeth, high speed braces (also called rapid orthodontics) can be a six-month solution. Through the use of high speed braces, you can achieve a straight smile in as little as half a year.
Only dentists that are licensed to market and apply high speed braces are allowed to use the term in their offices. Wellington Village Orthodontics in Ottawa is one of the few area orthodontists who can use this trademarked term; because they are licensed to administer these braces. This process uses self-litigating braces, which are distinctly different from traditional braces.
Traditional braces:
- Have brackets that are placed on each tooth
- Have an arch wire that goes through the brackets to apply pressure to the teeth
- Have a tie that connects the arch wire to the bracket
High Speed braces:
- Use no ties, which reduces the resistance of friction between the bracket and the wire. This enables your mouth to move more freely.
- Are permanently installed
- Have moveable components that hold the arch wire in place
- Are available in metal, cosmetic porcelain or lingual (on the backs of the teeth)
High Speed braces could be for you if:
- Your jaw and teeth are fully developed
- Your jaw and teeth do not require drastic adjustments
- You have no major problems with jaw alignment
High Speed Braces vs. Veneers
These short-term braces are a viable alternative to veneers because they offer low visibility. The nickel titanium arch wires are only visible when you smile. Because they provide quick results at a fraction of the cost of veneers, many Ottawans are choosing this orthodontic solution over porcelain veneers. In addition to costing less initially, high speed braces also cost less to maintain as long as you wear your retainers correctly.
Taking care of your high-speed braces
You need to pay close attention to your oral health care to prevent food from catching in your braces and causing tooth decay. To properly care for your braces it is recommended that you:
- Brush with a deep-cleaning toothpaste
- Floss at least once a day, despite the inhibitions of brushing around metal wiring
- If you cannot brush and floss right after a meal, rinse your mouth with water
