How to Detect a Leaky Pool

An in-ground pool will provide you, your family, and friends hours of summer enjoyment. Just like everything, they need regular inspections to avoid major problems. One thing to be on the lookout for is leaks.

Most leaks happen outside the pool around the plumbing and pump/filter circuit. These are easy to detect and are easily repaired.  If a leak occurs in the concrete shell, it may take dye testing or professional equipment to detect. Make sure to contact a professional in pool services in Ottawa.

Testing – Evaporation is a natural occurrence and is to be expected. If you think that your pool is losing too much water, there is a simple test. Fill a bucket with water. Mark the water levels in the bucket and in the pool.  Recheck 24 hours later. If the water level in the pool is greater than the water loss in the bucket, you have a leak and it is time for a repair.

Pump – You could have problems with your pump.  If the leak is greater when the pump circulates, there can be a leak in the return or pressure side of the system.  If the leakage is greater when the pump is off, there could be leaks in the pipes, fittings or valves in the suction side.  If you find that it needs frequent priming, or there are bubbles coming from the return jets that get better when the bleed valve is released, there could be some issues.

Other Areas – If the leak happens whether the pump is operating or not, there are some less severe potential causes.  If the water only lowers to a specific level and then is okay, check the water tightness of the lights or other fixtures.  If the water loss stabilizes below the level of the skimmers, that joint between the skimmer boxes and concrete pool could have separated.

You need to protect your investment and the surrounding landscape.  If you suspect a problem, have it checked out as quickly as possible.
