Polished concrete floors are becoming increasingly popular in grocery stores, retail establishments, showrooms, factories, churches, schools, and warehouses. It is a realistic alternative to VCT or ceramic tiles.
Concrete is durable and very low maintenance, which makes it cost-effective. Architects and designers are turning to it as a viable source of “green” material and to contribute to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) points. The higher the LEED rating, the more environmentally effective the building is categorized and more appealing ecologically and economically.
A polished concrete floor is a contemporary design that showcases the products in the retail establishment. It is a blank slate that provides the right ambiance for the company. The floors are not necessarily the industrial gray but can be colored with Pellucid Dyes. These are UV resistant, solvent-based dyes. Since the application of concrete gives the opportunity for different density and texture, each building can be unique. There are a number of topcoats to choose from to give the surface a finish of matte, satin, or gloss.
If you are planning to convert to a polished concrete floor, there are some things to remember. If you currently have carpet, that surface must be removed, including all the glue. If there is concrete surface underneath, the dye can be applied to the now clean concrete. It can be finished with polyurethane, allowing enough time between applications for thorough drying.
Maintenance is easy with daily routine sweeping and mopping. Each week a thorough mopping with neutral soap and rinsing the mop frequently and changing the water often. No waxing or polishing is necessary. Be sure to clean up any grease or other contaminants as quickly as possible.
