Even during the winter cold, snow, and ice, there are ways to enjoy your outdoor garden. Not everything is white and gray. Look for the color and interest we outline below. If you don’t currently incorporate any of these tips, think about how to achieve them during the spring and summer so that you will be ready for next year. As well, hiring a Landscaper in Ottawa can help you choose the best landscaping design and strategy for your yard!
Bark – Deciduous trees mostly lose their leaves during the winter. But if you really look at trees you will notice that different species have different types of bark that can lend interest in the winter. Birch trees have trunks that look like paper peeling off and dogwoods have lovely texture and color. Check out other ornamentals and see what they have to offer.
Evergreens – Evergreens are wonderful focal points during the wintertime. Newer varieties also have other color palettes like Gold Thread False Cypress. Also, look at the blue spruces for a different hue.
Container Gardening – Even though they are not filled with colorful annuals, fill your window box or hanging baskets with miniature, dwarf Alberta Spruce or rhododendron. You could even put in some artificial flowers just for the fun of it.
Foliage – There are some perennials that will still give color through all the seasons. Boxwoods are a good example, along with ornamental grasses and hellebores.
Winter is also a good time to stock up on supplies you will need in the spring-like new pots. Late winter is perfect for seed starting to get a jump on the early spring vegetables.
