Getting Your Pool Ready for Spring

pool services ottawa

Spring is the start of the swimming season. It is the season after many weeks of cold winter weather. So after many days of no use, it is the season pools start getting used again and sometimes that involves hiring someone that specializes in pool services in Ottawa. Follow the instructions below to get your pool absolutely ready for the spring season:

  1. Clear the winter cover and remove it

Clear all the water on your pool winter cover plus any debris on it. Removing the dirty water on top of the cover will make it easy to remove the cover while removing debris will reduce the amount of debris that ends up in the pool.

  1. Clean the cover and store it

After removing the cover, you should clean it by removing any debris left on it and sprinkle talcum powder on it after it dries up. The powder will help prevent mildew and mold buildup when you store it. Make sure you find a cool and dry place to store the cover.

  1. Refill your pool to halfway

Connect a pipe to your pool and refill it to around halfway.

  1. De-winterize your pool and switch its system on

At this point, you should reconnect the pool equipment and return everything to its pre-winterization condition. And then you should switch the system on.

  1. Prevent staining by adding MetalFree

After many months of not being used, pools usually have buildups of metals such as iron and copper. By adding MetalFree to your pool, you can prevent such metals from staining or discoloring your pool water.

  1. Test the acidity of your pool

Once the system has been working for a couple of hours, you should test the acidity of the water and other factors such as chlorine levels and alkalinity. Many labs can test such stuff for you. You just need to find them to do the tests for you. Based on the results of the tests you do, adjust the chemistry of your pool accordingly. You do not want a pool whose pH or alkalinity is too different from normal.

  1. Clean and vacuum the pool

After checking the pH of your pool and correcting any anomalies, it is time to methodically clean and vacuum the pool especially the steps, the ladders, and other equipment.

  1. Run the filtration and then shock your pool

Run the filtration system of your pool for several hours after cleaning to remove bacteria, algae,  debris, and dirt from the system. After filtering out dirt and debris, shock the pool to eliminate all remaining contaminants including germs and bacteria. There are many products on the market you can use to shock your pool. After following these eight steps, your pool should be ready for use after long winter months.
