Why Is Physiotherapy Needed?

Physiotherapy Ottawa

Physiotherapy, sometimes called physical therapy, is the process where a patient receives a combination of massage and stretches.  The physical therapist is a medical professional who will first evaluate and diagnose the problem and will manipulate the muscles and tendons.  It is used in the treatment of a number of diseases, disabilities, and disorders.

When an individual has tried some over-the-counter treatments, many of which are quite effective, but it does not seem to work, they will often turn to the physiotherapist for relief. Physical therapy is considered a part of conventional medical treatment and has three basic types.

  • Musculoskeletal – This is where muscles, joints or bones are causing pain.  This could have been caused by an injury, arthritis or a simple sprain.
  • Cardiothoracic – This treats breathing problems like asthma or chronic bronchitis.
  • Neurological – This has to do with brain functions like stroke patients, those with multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injuries.

The physiotherapist will assess the patient and determine what can be done to help the patient regain as much normal body function as possible.  This will include exercises as well as an eating plan.  Massage is probably the most common treatment a physical therapist will perform.  It will stimulate blood circulation and distribute bodily fluids.  It is used to encourage relaxation, treat sore muscles and to relieve minor conditions like headaches.

The patient can also be encouraged to use orthopedic supports that will shore up an injured muscle or to try a tens machine. Physical therapy is not new.  In fact, evidence shows that they have been in use since 3000 BC.  So, if you have been curious about physiotherapy, now you have some basic information to go forward.

If you are suffering from injury or pain, you should visit an Ottawa Physiotherapy or other specialists to ensure you get the proper treatment.
