Frequently Asked Questions About Botox

Botox Ottawa

Today there are a lot of questions surround Botox.  This article is designed to explain how it works and any side effects. First, Botox is a brand name for a substance that is injected into parts of the face.  These injections will minimize existing wrinkles and stop those that are in the process of forming.  Usually, the substance is used around the eyes but can be applied to other areas of the face.

It can also be used to attenuate excessive sweating, like under the arms, or to control muscle spasms. The substance is made from a bacterium.  If ingested, this bacterium can be harmful and even lethal to humans.  Since it is not being consumed and is actually only a derivative of the bacterium, it is safe for medical and cosmetic uses.

Safety

Since no live bacteria is used, this is a safe product.  The injections should always be performed by a qualified doctor and the dosage is low, there is little chance of a fatality.  Individuals should always carefully check the qualifications of the doctor to avoid scams by unscrupulous people.

Side Effects

The substance will remain in the patient’s system for three to six months.  Since it dissipates, there are no lasting or appreciable side effects.  Temporary conditions might be a headache or flu-like symptoms like nausea.  Occasionally a drooping eye has been reported, but this disappears in a few days.

Because these small side effects can be magnified in women who are pregnant or lactating, a Botox injection is not recommended in those instances.

In a small number of cases, the effects of consecutive injections have resulted in shorter periods of effectiveness.  Other patients have enjoyed long periods without the need for more injections.  Over time, the body will develop antibodies to the Botox making it less effective.

How It Works

Botox will block the normal release of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine.  This blockage will create a temporary paralysis of the area injected.  It will pull the skin tighter for a smoother, less wrinkled skin.  The full effect is usually seen about a week after administration.

It has proven highly effective but generally, the patient will require several applications per year to maintain the appearance.  The frequency will depend on the individual, but generally, the injections last for three to six months. If you are in Ottawa, contact Dermis Advanced Skin Care for more information and to book an appointment for Botox.
